Navigating Florida car hire insurance is the part of the trip most visitors from the UK and Europe can get wrong. The terms are new. The products have no match in most home markets. The desk feels rushed, more so after a long flight. This guide fixes that. It tells you what every product is, what your booking already includes, and what to do when you reach the desk

Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes comprehensive Florida car hire insurance cover as standard. CDW, (Collision Damage Waiver) TW (Theft Waiver) and SLI, (Supplementary Liability Insurance) all with zero excess are all in. Tyre, windscreen, and undercarriage cover come with it too with all rentals other than those taken with SIXT. You pay nothing extra at the desk. Nothing needs to be bought, asked for, or added.

Some car hire provider refer to CDW as "LDW". This is the same product. LDW is technically broader as it usually includes both Collision and Theft.

What this guide covers

This guide explains Florida car hire insurance for UK and European drivers. It covers CDW, Theft Waiver, SLI, zero excess, and PAI in plain terms. It also covers whether travel cover or credit card cover from your home country applies in Florida, what the desk will try to sell you, and what to do if you are not sure what you are being told. The team at Smarter Car Hire Florida has personal Florida rental desk experience dating back to 1992 behind this advice.

Why Florida car hire insurance confuses UK & European drivers

Visitors from the UK and Europe expect cover to work the way it does at home. In Britain, third-party cover is required by law. It comes with every car. In much of Europe, rentals are usually sold full-to-full with zero excess as the default, not as an extra. Either way, the rental desk at home is simple. Florida is different.

The rental firm presents cover products at the desk. They do this with urgency. The terms CDW, TW, SLI, do not exist in most home markets. Travel cover from home often fails to protect you on a Florida rental. But the biggest issue is this: desk staff are paid more when they sell extra products. The advice they give is not always neutral.

The result is the same on many trips. Visitors arrive at Florida rental desks unprepared. They face terms they do not know. They often buy products they do not need. Or they turn down cover they should keep.

The fix is simple: Know what your booking includes before you land. If you book through Smarter Car Hire Florida, full Florida car hire insurance cover is already in place, and like the zero deposit booking process itself, nothing needs to be added

Rob's car hire insurance lessons from the desk

Rob Gardner from Smarter Car Hire Florida has hired cars in Florida since 1992. He has made in excess of 30 bookings over that time. He has used Alamo, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, National, Enterprise, and SIXT across dozens of trips.

His early trips taught him a hard lesson. After a long flight, tired and in a new place, he agreed to extra products at the desk. He did not need any of them. The agent spoke with confidence. The products sounded useful. It was easy to say yes.

Key lessons from thirty years of rentals

  1. know your cover before you land. Plan ahead. Know your Florida car hire insurance in detail before your trip. That way you reach the desk with confidence. In all his years of booking through Smarter Car Hire Florida, Rob has never needed to buy a single extra product at the desk.

  2. Decline the prepay fuel offer. Rob has been offered prepay fuel on every Florida trip. The agent always says the price matches local pumps, or beats them. In our experience, this is not true. The rental firm fuel price is always higher. Decline it. Fill the tank yourself. It costs less.

  3. Read before you sign. Read what you are asked to sign. Every word. If you are not sure about any part of it, do not sign until you know what it means. Once you sign, getting a refund is almost impossible.

Included insurance cover on Smarter Car Hire Florida bookings

Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes the following cover as standard.

Tyre, glass and underbody insurance

Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking with Hertz, Alamo, Enterprise, Dollar, Thrifty, and National includes complete tyre, glass, and underbody damage protection as standard with zero excess. Rentals booked through SIXT exclude this cover by default and require a separate daily waiver fee.

For a complete breakdown of daily waiver fees, typical repair costs, and supplier comparisons, read our detailed Florida tyre and glass cover article.

Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Waiver

CDW stands for Collision Damage Waiver. It limits what you owe if the hire car is damaged. Theft Waiver limits what you owe if the car is stolen. Both are included in every booking.

Without CDW, you pay the full cost of any damage. In Florida that can include repair bills, loss of use fees, tow charges, admin fees, and in some cases a drop in the car's value. Rental firms apply these charges as a matter of course. They are not rare.

CDW and Theft Waiver remove that risk. For a full breakdown of CDW, and how it compares with UK travel cover and credit card cover, read our CDW insurance guide to learn whether you really need it.

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)

SLI (or SLP as it can also be referred to as) stands for Supplemental Liability Insurance, and is offered by car rental companies. It adds extra cover above the legally required minimums for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) in Florida, both of which are set at $10,000.

All bookings with Smarter Car Hire Florida include SLI cover of $300,000, a crucial component of comprehensive Florida car hire insurance.

Zero excess protection explained

The excess, called the deductible in the US, is the amount you pay even when CDW is in place. A CDW with a $1,500 excess means you pay the first $1,500 of any claim.

Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes zero excess. Your cost on covered events is zero.

If you hear the rental car staff use the term "Zero Deductible." then ordinarily this has the same meaning at zero excess. If you are unsure however, then we advise that you always ask for clarification.

Counter upsells: What the rental desk will offer you

Even with full cover in place, the desk agent will offer extra products. This happens on every rental. Knowing what each one is means you can say no with confidence.

Prepay fuel options

Unless otherwise stated, your booking includes a full-to-full or same-to-same fuel policy. This means that you collect with a full tank, and must return it full, otherwise the car rental company will charge you for the cost of replacing the fuel. These costs and associated fees can and often are very high and will be deducted from your security deposit.

At the rental desk you may be offered an option to pre pay for the fuel. If you chose this option, then you do not need to return the car full. However the cost for this service when taken at the desk in our experience, is that the cost of this service is far more than what it costs to re fuel the car and return it full ahead of your departure. If do not want this service, then simply decline and return the car full.

Something to bear in mind is that you may hear the car rental staff using the term "Like-for-Like.". This often used to describe the fuel policy that we refer to as "Full to Full".

Vehicle upgrades

The agent at the desk may ask how many people are in your group. The purpose of this is often to asses whether they have room to offer you an upgrade at cost to you.

You have already booked the right car for your trip, any upgrade is your choice.

Glass and tyre waivers

The desk agent may offer a separate tyre and glass waiver, sometimes priced as a daily charge or upfront fee. Decline it.

Your Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes tyre, glass and underbody damage cover at zero excess with Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Alamo, National and Enterprise. If you are renting with SIXT, this cover is not included and you may wish to consider purchasing the desk offer.

Rental firm toll passes

Every major rental firm sells a toll pass at the desk. Florida roads use cashless tolling. The rental firm version is priced by the day. On a longer rental it adds up fast.

Before you travel, look at your options. The Florida Visitor Toll Pass is a good choice for many UK visitors and is currently available at Orlando International Airport. SunPass is another option that is often cheaper than the rental firm product. Either way, plan ahead. Make this decision before the desk, not at it.

For a full comparison of SunPass, E-PASS, Visitor Toll Pass, and how to avoid rental company admin fees, read our Florida toll roads guide for UK drivers.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

PAI - Personal Accident Insurance, pays fixed sums for death or serious injury during the rental. Desk agents offer it as an add-on.

PAI is not in any Smarter Car Hire Florida booking. It cannot be added through the booking process. Customers who want this cover should arrange it through their travel insurance before they fly. Smarter Car Hire Florida strongly advises all customers to hold full travel insurance. It should cover medical costs, personal accidents, and cancellations. Medical bills in the US can be very large. Do not travel without it.

If you're planning to pay using a debit card rather than credit, see our debit card rules guide for Florida car hire, as requirements and restrictions vary significantly by supplier.

Travel insurance and credit card coverage from home in Florida

Many visitors arrive at a Florida rental desk thinking their annual travel policy or bank account cover protects them for car hire damage. In most cases, standard personal policies fail to provide adequate Florida car hire insurance. If you intend to rely on this sort of coverage, we strongly advise you to ensure the cover is adequate and appropriate when renting a car in Florida.

Travel policy limits from home

Travel cover from the UK and Europe often includes third-party liability for driving abroad and emergency medical cover. Some policies add a car hire excess waiver. But the limits and gaps in home policies mean full reliance on them for Florida car hire insurance is rarely a safe choice.

Common coverage gaps and exclusions

Many policies exclude the USA from their geographic scope. Where the US is covered, the sub-limits on car hire excess waivers often fall short of the Florida rental firm's excess. Secondary cover is also common. This means your insurer only pays after the rental firm's own cover is used up. You may still face large costs before any money comes back. Loss of use fees are another gap. Car hire cover from home often leaves these out, even where damage cover applies. These fees can be high. Rental firms charge them when a damaged car is off the road and out of service.

Credit card coverage limitations

Some credit cards issued in the UK and Europe include CDW for car hire (although from experience very few apply to car hire in the USA). If you book through Smarter Car Hire Florida, this is not an issue. Your full Florida car hire insurance cover is already in place. For customers using other providers without full cover included, check your card terms before declining desk CDW.

Essential questions to ask your insurer

Before you fly, call your travel insurer. Ask one question: does this policy cover crash damage to a hire car in Florida as primary cover, with no geographic exclusion, at a limit that matches the rental firm's excess? Most policies fail at least one of those three tests. Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking passes all three.

Good cover matters most when something goes wrong, but most UK holidaymakers find the bigger adjustment is simply getting used to driving in Florida, right-hand traffic, the rules that catch people out, and what to do if the weather turns.

Handling rental desk queries and disputes

Even well-prepared customers feel unsure at the desk sometimes. The agent may say something new. A charge may appear that was not in your booking.

Rob Gardner's advice is direct: do not sign and do not pay until you are sure. If anything is unclear, stop. Call the Smarter Car Hire Florida 24/7 support line before you commit

Call 01325 808123 - then choose option 1

The team can speak with you and with the desk agent. They will confirm what is and is not in your booking. They are on call at any hour, including when you land late. Once you sign, reversing a charge is very hard. Ask before you sign.

Documents to present at the counter

Bring these four items. Have them out before you reach the counter. Do not pack any of them in checked luggage.

  • Smarter Car Hire Florida booking voucher printed or on your phone.

  • Your photocard driving licence from your home country. Check whether your licence format requires an International Driving Permit for the USA before you travel.

  • Your current passport.

  • A credit card in the lead driver's name for the security deposit.

Any extra drivers on the booking must come to the desk with their licence and passport

Know your cover before you arrive

Check your booking before you fly. Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes CDW, Theft Waiver, SLI, zero excess, and tyre and windscreen cover. You can say no to any extra product at the desk with full confidence.

Check your fuel policy

All Smarter Car Hire Florida bookings use a full-to-full or same-to-same policy. Decline the prepay fuel offer. Return the car full.

Read before you sign

Read the rental agreement before you sign. If anything appears that was not in your booking, ask about it before you sign. Once signed, extras are nearly impossible to remove.

Vehicle condition inspection steps

Look at the car before you leave. Note any damage on the condition report. Get the desk agent to sign it off. Take photos and a short video of the car, including the roof, tyres, and underside. If you find damage, ensure the member of staff at the exit booth notes it on the digital record before you leave the airport perimeter.

Details of our insurance cover are set out in Section 13 of our Terms and Conditions. Travel policies from the UK and Europe often exclude or sub-limit hire car cover outside your home region, and the USA is one of the destinations most commonly affected.

Florida's own minimum insurance requirements, as low as $10,000 in property damage liability cover for any registered vehicle, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, give a sense of how modest the state's baseline expectations are. SLI raises your personal protection well above that floor.
