Miami International Airport (MIA) Car Hire: The Complete UK Guide

Miami is one of the most compelling Florida destinations for UK visitors — and one of the most rewarding places in the country to explore by hire car. Whether your trip is built around South Beach, the Art Deco District, the Everglades, or the iconic drive down the Florida Keys to Key West, a hire car is the single most important decision you will make before you land.

Miami International Airport uses a dedicated Rental Car Centre (RCC) — a separate building reached by the MIA Mover, a free automated train that connects the main terminal to the RCC in minutes. There are no hire car counters inside the terminal building. This guide tells you exactly how the system works, what to bring, and how to make the most of your time in one of America's greatest cities.

Why Miami Is an Exceptional Choice for UK Visitors

Miami is not a single destination — it is a collection of distinct experiences within an easy drive of each other. For UK visitors arriving at MIA, car hire is the key that unlocks all of them.

  • Daily direct flights from London: British Airways operates a daily non-stop service from London Heathrow to Miami International Airport from summer 2026, making MIA one of the most directly connected US destinations for UK travellers. Virgin Atlantic flies daily from London Heathrow to Miami, with a flight time of approximately 9–10 hours.

  • South Beach in 20 minutes: MIA sits approximately 11–12 miles from South Beach and the Art Deco District — under 20 minutes by hire car in light traffic. For UK visitors, this is one of the most convenient airport-to-destination drives in Florida.

  • The gateway to the Florida Keys: For UK visitors with the Keys on their itinerary, MIA is the natural starting point. Key West is 156 miles by road — a 3.5 to 4-hour drive via the Overseas Highway (US-1), one of the most scenic road journeys in the United States.

  • The Everglades on your doorstep: The entrance to Everglades National Park at Ernest F. Coe Visitor Centre is approximately 45 miles south-west of MIA — a straightforward hire car journey that no public transport option can replicate for convenience or flexibility.

Florida car hire also gives you practical daily freedom that Miami's geography demands. The city is sprawling, the public transport network is limited for visitors, and many of the most rewarding experiences — Wynwood, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Brickell, Key Biscayne — are separated by distances that make a hire car the only practical choice.

Collecting Your Hire Car at MIA — The MIA Mover Route

Miami International Airport routes all hire car collection through a dedicated Rental Car Centre (RCC) located at 3900 NW 25th Street — a short journey from the Main Terminal via the MIA Mover, a free automated train. There are no hire car counters in the arrivals building.

The RCC is open 24 hours a day, though some individual suppliers reduce their staffing between 11pm and 5am. If you are arriving on a late-night flight, confirm your supplier's out-of-hours arrangements before you travel. Hertz and Sixt however generally maintain 24-hour counter presence due to the volume of international arrivals. Dollar and Thrifty often consolidate desks late at night.

The step-by-step collection route:

  1. Clear baggage claim and Customs on Level 1 of the Main Terminal in the usual way.

  2. Make your way to Level 3. Arrivals are on Level 1 — take the lifts or escalators to Level 3, located between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.

  3. Follow signs for MIA Mover / Rental Car Centre. On Level 3, follow the moving walkways from the Central Terminal to the MIA Mover Station.

  4. Board the MIA Mover. The train is free and connects the Main Terminal directly to the Rental Car Centre's customer service lobby. The journey takes a few minutes.

  5. At the RCC. All major on-airport suppliers are here — including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty. Follow signs for your named supplier's counter.

  6. Collect your vehicle from the RCC garages. Once your paperwork is processed — or if you are using Alamo's Skip the Counter (see below) — drive to the exit gate, confirm with the gate agent, and you are on your way.

Return route: When returning your car at the end of your trip, follow signs for the Rental Car Centre from the approach roads into MIA. Return your vehicle at the RCC, then board the MIA Mover back to the Main Terminal for check-in. Signage is clear throughout the airport.

Alamo at MIA — Faster Pick-Up Options

Alamo at MIA offers the same pre-registration system as at MCO and Tampa, including self-service kiosks and full Skip the Counter capability. If you are collecting with Alamo, a small amount of preparation before you fly can remove your counter visit entirely.

Toll Roads Around Miami — What UK Drivers Need to Know

Miami has one of the most tolled road networks in Florida. The main expressways in and around the city are fully cashless, you cannot pay at a booth, and several of the most direct routes from MIA to popular destinations involve toll roads from the moment you leave the Rental Car Centre.

The toll roads you are most likely to use:

  • SR-836 Dolphin Expressway: The most direct east-west route from MIA toward downtown Miami and Miami Beach. This road is tolled and cashless.

  • SR-826 Palmetto Expressway: A north-south route connecting the northern and western suburbs of Miami. Tolled and cashless throughout.

  • Florida Turnpike (Homestead Extension / SR-91): If you are heading south from Miami toward the Everglades or the Florida Keys approach roads, you will encounter the Florida Turnpike. Cashless throughout.

  • I-395 / MacArthur Causeway: The most direct route from downtown Miami to South Beach. Currently toll-free - but check before you travel as toll status on causeway routes in Miami can change.

  • The I-95 Express Lanes which feed into the city are heavily tolled. Be aware that accidentally entering an "Express" lane without a transponder/toll plan will result in significant fines.

Florida Keys — toll position: The Overseas Highway (US-1) through the Florida Keys is not a toll road. There are no tolls on the main route from Florida City to Key West. The only toll-bearing alternative route is the Card Sound Road (SR-905A), a scenic back route through North Key Largo that carries a cash or SunPass toll. If you take the standard US-1 route through the Keys, you will not encounter toll plazas.

Your toll options flying into MIA

As with Tampa, the Florida Visitor Toll Pass is not available at Miami Airport. Visitor Toll Pass vending machines are located exclusively at Orlando International Airport. This is a frequent question from UK visitors flying into MIA, and the answer is consistently confirmed.

UK visitors flying into MIA have three practical options:

1. SunPass (Recommended): Purchase a SunPass Mini ($4.99) or SunPass Pro ($14.99) at any Publix, CVS, or Walgreens once you leave the airport. It is the cheapest way to pay.

2. Rental Agency Program: Most suppliers offer a "PlatePass" or "TollPass" service. This is convenient but usually carries a daily "convenience fee" (approx. $5.00–$10.00/day). Please confirm prices with car hire provider.

What to Bring, What to Expect, and What Not to Get Caught Out By

Arriving at the RCC with everything in order is straightforward if you prepare before you board. These are the documents and practicalities that matter most.

Documents you need at the collection desk:

  • Full in-date UK Photocard Driving Licence — the plastic card is your primary document. Your licence must be current and valid for the full hire period.

  • Passport — required by all major suppliers at MIA for identity verification.

  • Credit card in the lead driver's name — must match your booking and driving licence exactly. Required for the security deposit hold.

  • Your Smarter Car Hire Florida booking confirmation — your reference number.

If you are adding an additional driver at collection, they must be present at the desk with their own driving licence and passport.

The security deposit hold

Even on a zero deposit booking, your supplier will place a temporary security hold on the lead driver's credit card. This is a reservation of funds — not a payment. No money leaves your account. It is released when you return the car undamaged, typically within 24 hours to five working days depending on your card issuer.

Paying with a debit card

Most suppliers at MIA prefer or require a credit card for the deposit hold. If you do not have a credit card, read our debit card car hire in Florida guide before you travel — conditions and restrictions vary by supplier.

Essential "Land & Go" Checklist for UK Drivers at MIA

Before leaving the Rental Car Centre:

  • Documents checked: UK Photocard Licence, passport, and credit card — all presented and verified at the desk.

  • Toll solution in place: SunPass ordered and activated, hire company toll programme accepted at the desk, or decision made based on your itinerary. If using SunPass, register your hire car's number plate in the app after collecting the vehicle.

  • Declined the daily-fee toll programme at the desk if you have your own SunPass.

  • Choice lot: If your supplier offers a vehicle choice, check mileage and fuel before leaving.

  • Right on Red: Turning right at a red traffic light is permitted in Florida after a full stop, Unless a 'No Turn on Red' sign is present. read more about the new 2026 Florida driving laws that are now in operation.

  • Speed limits are in miles per hour: 70 mph on interstate highways, 55–65 mph on state roads, 30–35 mph in urban areas. Speed limits are enforced — including in school zones, where fines are doubled.

  • 2026 Booster Seat Law: Children must be secured in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device until their 6th birthday. This applies in hire cars. See our Florida Child Seat Laws guide for full details.

  • Fuelling: Most hire cars use Regular Petrol (87 Octane) — the black pump handle. The green handle is almost always Diesel. Do not use it in a petrol hire car.

  • Parking in Miami: Miami's parking enforcement is active, particularly in South Beach, Brickell, and Wynwood. Use confirmed pay-and-display bays or car parks — do not rely on street parking in areas you do not know.
