Car hire at Walt Disney World is one of the most flexible options for UK holidaymakers, providing a great alternative to collecting their car hire from an airport. Hiring a car for all or part of your holiday is entirely optional. You do not even need to leave the resort to arrange it.

The Walt Disney World Car Care Centre sits inside the resort boundary. It offers Alamo, Enterprise, and National hire cars. A free shuttle collects you from your Disney hotel door.

Why the Car Care Centre suits Disney resort guests

Walt Disney World runs a free, comprehensive internal transport network. Buses connect every Disney resort hotel to every theme park. The Monorail links Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and the hotels around them. The Skyliner serves EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and several resorts. Water taxis connect the lakeside hotels. This network runs early and finishes late. For days spent entirely within Disney, a hire car adds nothing the transport is already there and already free.

However, that changes the moment you want to step outside the resort. Universal Studios is 20 minutes away by road. The Kennedy Space Centre is an hour east. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf Coast is 90 minutes away. The Florida Keys are a full day's drive south. Disney's own transport does not go to any of these places. A hire car does.

For UK holidaymakers planning a mixed holiday, the Car Care Centre is the right model. Collect on the day you want to explore. Return it when you are done. You only pay for the days you drive.


The Car Care Centre versus collecting at the airport

Most UK holidaymakers flying to Florida land at Orlando International Airport (MCO). However, for guests spending their whole holiday at Disney, collecting at the airport creates a potential problem they may not need.

Collecting at MCO means paying from day one. If you need a car for 4 days of a 12-day trip, collecting at MCO means you pay for 12. Collect at the Car Care Centre on day 5 and you only pay for 4.

Collecting at MCO also means driving Florida's roads after a long transatlantic flight. Often, this happens later in the day when drivers may feel tired, having been travelling possibly with children for 10 or more hours.

Escaping the airport crowds

Collecting you car from any of the rental desks located in MCO can take up some of your valuable holiday time. By contrast, using the Car Care Centre within Disney World involves a short shuttle ride and a calm desk experience, away from airport crowds.

Of course, there is no wrong answer for every visitor. If you plan to drive from your first day, collecting your car hire at MCO makes complete sense. Nevertheless, if your holiday starts at Disney and the car is only needed later, the Car Care Centre is almost always the better option.


Hiring for part of your stay

This is the most common scenario for UK Disney resort guests who book with Smarter Car Hire Florida. A typical enquiry involves ten days in Florida, with the first five at Disney, followed by a few days driving the Gulf Coast, and then a final couple of days back at the resort.

The Car Care Centre handles exactly this. Collect on day six, drive for four or five days, and return the car. Your insurance, zero excess, and zero deposit all apply to the shorter hire exactly as they do to a longer one.

Booking your partial-stay hire

Returning to a different location

Some UK holidaymakers collect at the Car Care Centre and return elsewhere. A common example is a family that spends the first half of their trip at Disney, picks up a car, drives to the Gulf Coast or the Keys, and then flies home from a different Florida airport. Returning the car at MCO rather than driving back to the resort is the most practical way to end that kind of trip.

One-way car hire in Florida is available through Smarter Car Hire Florida. However, a one-way fee may apply. The amount varies by supplier and vehicle class. The exact cost will be shown during the booking process under the heading 'Mandatory local charge'.


The three suppliers

Alamo, Enterprise, and National are the three hire car companies at the Walt Disney World Car Care Centre. All three are major global suppliers. All are available through Smarter Car Hire Florida.

When you book through Smarter Car Hire Florida, your booking voucher shows which supplier will fulfil your reservation. Between them, they provide a full range of vehicles from compact cars to full-size SUVs.

Opening hours and location

The Car Care Centre hire car facility is open every day from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The free shuttle from your Disney resort hotel runs from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily. Both sets of hours are confirmed on the official Walt Disney World Car Care Centre page.

The centre sits at 1000 West Car Care Drive, Bay Lake, Florida 32830, near the Magic Kingdom auto plaza on the western edge of the resort.


How to arrange your hire car — step by step

Step 1 - Book through Smarter Car Hire Florida. Enter your dates and select the 'Orlando Walt Disney World Resort USA' as your collection point. Click search for your car options. Chose your preferred car type and size and continue through to the booking area to complete your reservation. Remember your booking is confirmed with zero deposit, your full balance is due 6 weeks prior to collection. Step 2 - Arrange the shuttle. Once confirmed, call the Car Care Centre shuttle line on 00 800 2006 0809 ext. 1 or (407) 824-3470 ext. 1 to schedule your hotel pickup. Disney suggest that you do this at least two hours before your intended collection time. Otherwise, ask your hotel front desk if they can assist as they connect directly to the Car Care Centre. You can also call up to 24 hours in advance.

Step 3 - Wait at the correct pickup point. For most Disney resort hotels, wait outside the main lobby. However, there are three exceptions. First, Shades of Green guests wait outside on the upper level. Next, Fort Wilderness Resort guests wait at the Outpost. Finally, Saratoga Springs Resort guests, including guests in the Treehouse Villas wait outside the Carriage House. The shuttle comes to you. The Disney World complimentary shuttle service is a great alternative to using ride share companies.

Collecting your vehicle

Step 4 - Collect your vehicle. Once at the Car Care Centre, go to the desk for your supplier, shown on your Smarter Car Hire Florida booking voucher. Alamo has a self-service touch-screen kiosk that lets you check in without queuing. The kiosk prints your rental agreement. You are directed to your car on the lot. Show your agreement and driving licence at the exit booth, and drive away. Enterprise and National use staffed desks where the team will take you through the collection process.

Step 5 - Check the vehicle before you drive away. Always walk around the car before leaving. Note any existing marks on the condition report. Get the desk agent to sign it off. Take photos or a short video including the roof, tyres, and underside. This protects you at return.

What to bring

  • Your Smarter Car Hire Florida booking voucher

  • Your full UK photocard driving licence. Please note that if your driving licence is not in English or is the old paper type, an International Drivers Permit (IDP) will be required.

  • Your current UK passport

Using the complimentary shuttle

The shuttle runs door-to-door between your Disney resort hotel and the Car Care Centre, at no charge. It also runs from the Walt Disney World theme parks and water parks, all confirmed on the official Walt Disney World car rental services page.

The shuttle pickup points at the parks are as follows: Magic Kingdom, the Transportation and Ticket Centre; EPCOT, the taxi stand; Hollywood Studios, bus parking charter C-59. You can also be collected from Animal Kingdom, the rideshare stand; Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, the main guest entrance; Disney Springs, the Lynx bus stop outside Cirque du Soleil; ESPN Wide World of Sports, the main entrance.

When returning your car, the shuttle drops you back at your resort hotel or your chosen park location. The Car Care Centre is not on the Disney bus network. The dedicated hire car shuttle is the only Disney-provided return transport.


Returning your car after hours

If you need to return after 6:00 PM, Alamo provides an after-hours key drop box. Park in the designated area, drop the keys in the box, and the desk closes out your rental. The shuttle does not run after the Car Care Centre closes. You will need your own return transport. Uber and Lyft are reliable from that part of the resort.

When returning you hire car, we advise that you take a photograph of the fuel gauge, especially if your fuel policy was full to full.


Comprehensive insurance coverage

Every Smarter Car Hire Florida booking includes fully comprehensive cover: CDW, Theft Waiver and SLI. Each of these include zero excess, you do not need to purchase any additional insurance at the desk, regardless of which supplier fulfils your booking. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is not included. You should ensure you hold appropriate travel insurance, including medical cover, before travelling to the USA.
