Some Quick Answers for UK Travellers

Before you dive into the details, here are just some of the questions UK holidaymakers ask most:

Orlando International Airport (MCO), Car Hire and Essential Information

Orlando International Airport is the primary arrival point for UK holidaymakers travelling to Florida. In 2023, MCO processed 57.7 million passengers, making it the busiest airport in Florida and one of the busiest in the United States. UK travellers are well served by direct flights from London, Manchester and seasonally from Edinburgh. British Airways, Aer Lingus and Norse Atlantic Airways operate from the modern Terminal C. Virgin Atlantic has confirmed that they will be moving their operation from terminal A to terminal C at MCO as of 30th June 2026. Please check your flight documentation and Virgin Atlantic's airport guide for your correct arrival and departure terminal.

The airport code MCO comes from the site's former name, McCoy Air Force Base, which closed in 1975. Today, Orlando International Airport serves around 40 airlines and over 170 destinations worldwide. The scale of the airport can feel daunting on arrival. However, car hire collection is straightforward once you know what to expect. The guidance below covers the full process from arrival to driving away.

All of our Florida car hire providers operate from rental desks located in terminals A, B and C. There are no shuttle buses and no off-site transfers required.

Why Orlando MCO is the Smarter Start to Your Florida Holiday

MCO is well positioned for Florida's most popular holiday destinations. Walt Disney World Resort is approximately a 30 to 40 minute drive from the airport in normal traffic, depending on your specific destination within the resort. Universal Orlando Resort and International Drive are similarly accessible from MCO. Journey times vary depending on traffic conditions. Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic coast is accessible to the east of MCO. The Tampa Bay area, including Clearwater and St Petersburg, is accessible to the west via the I-4 corridor. Exact journey times will vary significantly depending on traffic conditions, time of day and your specific destination.

The airport is served by the Beachline Expressway (SR-528), which heads west towards the I4 and International Drive providing onward access to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. The Central Florida GreeneWay (SR-417) provides a direct connection to the theme park corridor and International Drive. Both are toll roads. The Florida Turnpike (SR-91) provides access to destinations further north and south of the Orlando area. All Florida toll roads operate on a cashless basis. A valid electronic toll payment solution is therefore essential before you leave the airport. The section on toll roads further down this page explains your options in full.

Together, direct UK flights, a modern terminal built for international arrivals, on-site car hire and excellent road connections make MCO the natural choice for UK holidaymakers starting a Florida holiday or road trip.

Terminal C Walkthrough: From Arrival to the Open Road

If you are travelling on a direct flight from the UK with British Airways, Aer Lingus or Norse Airlines, you will arrive at Terminal C. Terminal C opened in September 2022 and was designed specifically for international arrivals. The process here differs from Terminals A and B at MCO and from most other US airports. Reading this walkthrough before you travel will save time and avoid confusion on the day.

Please note that the proposed transfer of Virgin Atlantic operations from Terminal A to Terminal C has been confirmed to take place on Tuesday 30th June 2026. Ensure that you refer to Virgin Atlantic's airport guide for up to date information.

Step 1: The Bags First Arrivals Process

Terminal C uses a Bags First arrivals process for international passengers. This is the reverse of most other US airports, where you clear Immigration before collecting your luggage.

At Terminal C, you walk from your gate to the baggage claim area first. You collect your checked luggage before you reach the Immigration and Customs hall. Once you have everything, you proceed through Immigration and Customs with your bags already in hand.

This process is faster and removes the uncertainty of waiting for luggage after a long Immigration queue. It was one of the key design priorities of the new terminal. For most UK travellers, it represents a genuine improvement over the older MCO terminals.

Step 2: From Customs to Your Car Hire Desk

After clearing Customs, follow the overhead signs for Car Hire or Ground Transportation. These signs are clearly displayed throughout the terminal. They will guide you directly to Garage C, the car hire facility connected to Terminal C.

All car hire suppliers at Terminal C have their check-in desks on Level 4 of Garage C. This applies whether you have booked with Alamo, National, Enterprise, Sixt, Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty. The walk from the Customs exit to the car hire desks on Level 4 of Garage C is straightforward and clearly signposted.

There are no shuttle buses and no external transfers required. Do not board any shuttle bus or follow any direction towards an off-site facility. All car hire providers we work with are located on-site in Garage C.

Step 3: The Florida Visitor Toll Pass

Before visiting your car hire desk, we strongly recommend collecting your Florida Visitor Toll Pass if you have pre-registered using the free app. The Visitor Toll Pass vending machines are located on Level 4 of Garage C, near the car hire counters at Terminal C.

The Florida Visitor Toll Pass is an official programme run by the Central Florida Expressway Authority. It is a temporary electronic toll payment hang tag for rental car customers arriving through Orlando International Airport. It works on all toll roads throughout Florida. These include the Beachline Expressway, the Central Florida GreeneWay, the Florida Turnpike, the I-4 Express Lanes and all other Florida toll roads and express lanes. According to the Central Florida Expressway Authority, the programme saves visitors to Florida up to 80 per cent compared to the toll payment options offered by rental car suppliers.

Here is how to get your Visitor Toll Pass. First, download the free Visitor Toll Pass app before you travel. It is available on the Apple App Store and on Google Play. Next, register your trip details and provide your credit card information. A refundable deposit of $10 USD is required. This deposit is put towards your toll charges. Any unused balance is refunded to your card after you return the pass at the end of your trip.

At the airport, open the app and scan the QR code at one of the vending machines on Level 4 of Garage C. Your hang tag is dispensed from the machine. Hang it from the arm of your rear-view mirror before you leave the garage. You will also need to enter your hire car number plate into the app before you exit the airport.

At the end of your holiday, return the hang tag to a drop box at the airport. If you do not return it, a fee of $10 will be charged to your card. The Visitor Toll Pass is the most cost-effective toll solution available for visitors to Florida driving on UK hire car bookings. We strongly recommend setting it up before you travel.

Step 4: At the Car Hire Desk

When you reach your supplier's desk on Level 4 of Garage C, have the following four documents ready.

  • Rental voucher including booking confirmation.

  • Your valid UK photocard driving licence.

  • Your passport.

  • A credit card in the lead driver's name.

At the desk, the agent will verify your reservation and check your documents. They will also process your rental agreement. As part of this process, a security deposit pre-authorisation will be placed on your credit card. This is a temporary hold on your available credit. It is not a charge. The amount varies by supplier and vehicle category. Full details and amounts are set out in our quotes and on your booking confirmation. Please note that if your booking allows for the use of a debit card the cost of the security deposit may be more than that it would be with a credit card.

Your booking from Smarter Car Hire Florida already includes fully comprehensive Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) with zero excess. Because of this, you do not need to purchase any additional insurance at the desk. The agent may offer additional products. You are not obliged to accept any of them. If you have any questions about your cover before you travel, our UK support team is available via WhatsApp and telephone on +44 (0)1325 808 123.

Read our complete guides to Florida car hire insurance for UK travellers and zero deposit Florida car hire.

If you have any issues whilst at the rental desk and have questions or you are unsure of how to proceed, please call our dedicated 24/7 UK helpline on +44 (0)1325 808 123 followed by option 1 before making any payment or signing any agreement.

Step 5: Collecting Your Hire Car

Once your paperwork is complete, the desk agent will direct you to your vehicle in Garage C. Before driving away, carry out the following checks.

Walk all the way around the vehicle. Look carefully for any existing damage, including scratches, scuffs and dents. If you find damage that is not noted on your rental agreement, photograph it clearly, and ask the member of staff on the exit kiosk to document the damage before you leave the garage.

Check the fuel level. It should match the level on your rental agreement, which is typically Full. If it does not match, again take a photograph of it and ask the member of staff at the exit kiosk to note it before leaving the garage.

Before pulling out of the garage, take a moment with the controls. On American vehicles, the indicator stalk is often on the left and the windscreen wiper stalk is on the right. This is the reverse of UK vehicles. It is worth checking this before you drive on to a busy Florida road.

If you have a Visitor Toll Pass, hang it from the arm of your rear-view mirror now. Enter your hire car number plate into the Visitor Toll Pass app before you exit the garage. There are devices located at the exit of the garage that register your number plate with your Visitor Toll Pass account, however we advise that you apply this yourself via the app before driving out of the garage.

At the exit kiosk, show your rental agreement and driving licence to the gate attendant. After that, you are on your way.

Returning Your Hire Car: Important Information

When returning to MCO at the end of your holiday, follow the airport signs for Car Rental Return. Do not follow signs for your airline terminal. The car hire return area is separate from the passenger terminals.

For UK flights departing from Terminal C, follow signs for Terminal C Car Rental Return. An agent will inspect the vehicle, check the fuel level and issue your return receipt. The fuel level must match the level agreed at collection, which is typically Full. If you return the car with less fuel, the supplier will charge for the shortfall at a rate significantly above local forecourt prices.

Upon your arrival back at the airport, we strongly advise that you place the car keys on top of the dashboard and take photographs of them in situ as well as the fuel gauge. This is a precautionary measure should there be a dispute relating to either the keys or the amount of fuel that was in the car upon its return.

Allow sufficient time between returning your vehicle and reaching your departure gate. MCO recommends arriving at your departure terminal at least 2 hours before your scheduled flight time. Factor in the walk from the car hire return area to your terminal when planning your arrival.

If you collected a Visitor Toll Pass, return the hang tag to one of the drop boxes in the airport before you leave. Your refund for any unused deposit balance will be credited to your card within 7 to 10 days. The locations of the Florida Visitor Toll Pass kiosks in Terminal C are on the official FVTP website.

Virgin Atlantic UK Holidaymakers and Those Arriving via a US Connection Terminals A and B Explained

Virgin Atlantic is one of the UK's most significant carriers to Florida, transporting thousands of UK holidaymakers to and from Orlando each year. As of May 2026, all Virgin Atlantic flights to and from Orlando International Airport arrive and depart from Terminal A. Virgin Atlantic has announced a planned move to Terminal C, which will be confirmed once the necessary CBP approvals are in place. There is currently no confirmed date for this move. We strongly recommend checking the Virgin Atlantic Orlando airport guide and your booking documentation before you travel to confirm your correct terminal.

Virgin Atlantic official Orlando airport guide — virginatlantic.com

UK holidaymakers connecting through a US hub before flying on to Orlando will also arrive at Terminals A or B. Common US connection points include Atlanta, Charlotte and New York. When you connect through a US airport, you clear US Immigration at your first point of entry into the United States. Your onward Orlando flight is therefore treated as a domestic service, and you arrive at the North Terminal Complex rather than Terminal C.

When arriving at Terminal A on a Virgin Atlantic flight, the arrivals process differs from Terminal C. After disembarking, you will clear Immigration and Customs before collecting your luggage. Once you have collected your bags and exited the Customs area, you have the option to place your luggage onto a belt system that transports it to the main terminal building, allowing you to travel unencumbered. Using either an escalator or a lift, proceed up one level to the automated passenger transport system. Board this and it will take you directly to the main terminal building. Staff will tell you which baggage claim your luggage will be on in the main terminal.

Once in the main terminal building, you have direct access to the car hire desks that serve both terminals A and B. Depending on your choice of terminal, the car hire desks are located on either L1, L2 or for Sixt P1. The collection process from that point is the same as described above for Terminal C.

Once at your supplier's desk, the collection process is the same as described in the Terminal C walkthrough above. You will need your rental voucher and booking confirmation, valid UK photocard driving licence, passport and a credit card in the lead driver's name. Your booking from Smarter Car Hire Florida includes the same fully comprehensive Collision Damage Waiver, Loss Damage Waiver and Supplementary Liability Insurance with zero excess, regardless of which terminal you arrive at.

For Virgin Atlantic passengers who wish to transfer to Terminal C for any reason, the people mover train is accessed on Level 3 on the east side of the Terminal A and B building. After disembarking the train, follow the walkway through Parking Garage C. For car hire collection, this transfer is not necessary. All of our car hire providers operate from both the Terminal C and Terminal A and B facilities.

What to Bring, What to Expect, and What Not to Get Caught Out By

A small number of UK holidaymakers encounter avoidable problems at the car hire desk each year. These usually involve missing documents or misunderstandings about payment. The following guidance ensures you arrive fully prepared.

The Documents You Need at Collection

You need four documents to collect your hire car at Orlando Airport. Each one is required without exception.

First, you need a valid UK photocard driving licence. You must have held your full licence for a minimum of 12 months and your licence must be valid for the full duration of your rental. If it expires during your trip, you will be refused the vehicle. The older paper driving licence is not usually accepted, we advise that if you intend to use a paper licence that you obtain an International Drivers Permit (IDP) prior to travelling.

Second, you need your passport. This must be valid for your trip to the United States. Ensure your ESTA or US visa is also confirmed before you travel.

Third, you need a credit card in the lead driver's name. The card must belong to the person named as lead driver on the rental agreement. It cannot be in a partner's or spouse's name. This is a firm requirement of the rental supplier and cannot be waived.

Fourth, you need your booking confirmation from Smarter Car Hire Florida. This contains your reservation details, the cover included and the information needed to process your rental.

Note. All additional drivers must also have these documents available for inspection at the rental desk so that they can be properly added to the car hire agreement.

If any of these documents are missing, unavailable or do not match the rental agreement, you may be refused the rental. We strongly recommend checking all four items are in your hand luggage well before you travel.

The Security Deposit Explained

When you collect your hire car, the rental supplier places a security deposit pre-authorisation on your credit card. This is a temporary hold on part of your available credit. It is not a charge. No money leaves your account.

The hold is released by the supplier once you return the vehicle. Your bank then processes the release. This typically takes 3 to 7 working days, depending on your card issuer.

The amount of the deposit varies by supplier and vehicle category. Full details for your specific booking are outlined in the quote area and in your booking confirmation. We recommend ensuring your credit card has sufficient available credit for the deposit, in addition to your spending money for the trip.

Do You Need an International Driving Permit?

No. If you hold a valid UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Florida. The photocard driving licence is recognised by car hire companies throughout the United States.

If you hold the older paper driving licence, you will need either an International Driving Permit or a photocard replacement. International Driving Permits are available from Pay Point located throughout the UK. Please check the current price and availability of an IDP before you travel. Photocard replacements can be applied for at GOV.UK.

Also, if your licence is in a language other than English, then you will require an International Driving Permit.

It is worth noting that some car hire desk agents occasionally advise UK holidaymakers that an International Driving Permit is required. This is not accurate. Your valid UK photocard driving licence is sufficient. If challenged, politely clarify this. Your booking confirmation from Smarter Car Hire Florida also supports this position.

A Note on Debit Cards

Policies on debit card acceptance vary between rental suppliers and are subject to change. Some suppliers accept debit cards under certain conditions. Others require a credit card in all circumstances. The specific payment requirements for your chosen supplier are set out in your booking confirmation.

If you plan to use a debit card for the security deposit, please be aware that the deposit is taken as an actual debit from your bank account. This means the funds leave your account until the deposit is returned after you bring back the car. If you are in any doubt, contact us on +44 (0)1325 808 123 before you travel.

If you intend to use your debit card to pay for your security deposit at the rental desk, then read our comprehensive guide that sets out the conditions of using a debit card for your Florida car hire. We also have an article which explains the use of debit cards with Alamo car hire.

Alamo at MCO: The Skip the Counter Option

If your booking is with Alamo, you may be eligible to use their Skip the Counter service at Orlando MCO. This allows eligible customers to bypass the rental desk entirely. Instead, you go directly to the garage to collect your vehicle.

To use Skip the Counter, complete Alamo's online Accelerated Check-In before you travel. This involves registering your driving licence and credit card details on the Alamo website or through the Alamo app. On completion, you receive a barcode confirmation. When you arrive at MCO, proceed directly to the appropriate garage with your barcode, driving licence and credit card. An Alamo team member will direct you to the correct aisle for your vehicle category. You then choose any vehicle from that aisle, load your luggage and drive to the exit gate.

Please note that to use the Skip the Counter facility you must enter the Alamo booking reference and not the Smarter Car Hire Florida booking reference. The Alamo booking reference is clearly visible on your rental voucher. To register you must use the Alamo skip the counter.

Availability is subject to Alamo's current eligibility criteria, and the service may not be available for your rental if for example you have ordered a child seat which must be collected at the rental desk. We therefore recommend confirming eligibility with Alamo directly once you receive your booking confirmation. This is particularly important if you are using a debit card or if the lead driver is under 25 years of age.
