Car hire at Tampa International Airport (TPA): The complete UK & European guide
Welcome to your practical guide for collecting your hire car at Tampa International Airport and making the most of one of Florida's most underrated destinations. If you have chosen Tampa as your point of entry into Florida, you have made an excellent decision, and this guide will make sure your holiday starts the moment you clear arrivals.
Tampa International Airport operates one of the most streamlined car hire collection experiences in Florida. Unlike many US airports where hire car desks are in the terminal building, TPA uses a dedicated Rental Car Centre connected to the Main Terminal by the SkyConnect automated train. It is a simple, well-signposted system, but knowing what to expect before you land makes a significant difference after a nine-hour flight.
Why Tampa is an exceptional choice for UK & European visitors
Tampa is no longer Florida's best-kept secret among UK travellers, but it still feels that way once you arrive. The combination of a compact, walkable city centre, world-class beaches within 30 minutes, Busch Gardens, and straightforward access to both coasts makes it one of the most versatile Florida bases available. A hire car does not just complement a Tampa holiday, for most UK visitors, it is essential.
As you will see below, Tampa International airport is also an ideal location from where to travel onto your final destination in the Orlando area.
Direct from the UK: Virgin Atlantic operates a daily direct service from London Heathrow to Tampa. British Airways has flown London to Tampa for decades from London Gatwick, but from 25 October 2026, British Airways is relocating to London Heathrow with a new service, operating five times a week with a new aircraft. If you're booking before that date, double-check which London airport your BA flight actually departs from.
Tampa Bay at your door: From TPA, you are approximately 30 minutes from downtown Tampa, 35 minutes from St Pete Beach, 40 minutes from Clearwater Beach, and 75 minutes from Sarasota. For UK visitors planning a Gulf Coast beach holiday, no other airport puts you closer to where you want to be.
An easy drive to Orlando: If your trip combines Gulf Coast beaches with a theme park visit, Tampa gives you excellent access to both. Orlando's major parks are approximately 90 minutes by road — a comfortable day trip that also bypasses the congestion of the I-4 corridor from the west.
Source: Distance estimates based on standard road routing; manual verification recommended for current travel times.
Choosing to hire your car directly at TPA removes the need for transfers entirely and puts you in control of your itinerary from the moment you clear Customs.
Collect your hire car at TPA: The SkyConnect route
Tampa International Airport uses a centralised Rental Car Centre (RCC) for all major on-airport hire companies. The RCC is separate from the Main Terminal building and is reached via the SkyConnect a free, frequent automated train that runs between the terminal and the RCC throughout the day and night.
There are no hire car counters inside the terminal itself. This is the single most important fact to know before you land.
The step-by-step collection route:
Clear baggage claim and Customs in the Main Terminal. Follow signs for your airline's arrivals hall in the usual way.
Follow signs for SkyConnect / Rental Car Centre. Signs are clearly displayed throughout the Main Terminal. Make your way to the SkyConnect station - this is is located on Level 4 of the Main Terminal. Travelers arriving at Airside gates must take the airside shuttle to the Main Terminal first, clear baggage/customs, and then head to Level 4.
Board the SkyConnect. The train is free, runs frequently, and takes you directly to the Rental Car Centre. The journey itself is short, allow 5 to 10 minutes from the SkyConnect platform including the train ride and the walk from the RCC entrance to your supplier's counter. we recommend guests should allow 15 minutes to account for walking from baggage claim and potential wait times for the next train.
Exit at the Rental Car Centre. All major on-airport suppliers are here, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty. Follow signs for your named supplier. Counters and the associated car garages are all within the same building.
Collect your vehicle from the garage. Once your paperwork is processed (or if you are using Alamo's Skip the Counter, see below), your car is in the RCC garages. Drive to the exit, confirm details with the gate agent, and you are on your way.
Return route: When returning your car at the end of your trip, follow signs for the Rental Car Centre from the main road network into TPA. Return your vehicle at the RCC, then board the SkyConnect back to the Main Terminal for check-in. The system is fully signed throughout.
Alamo at TPA: Skip the counter and go straight to your car
If you are collecting with Alamo, you have the option to bypass the counter entirely using the same Skip the Counter system available at MCO. As with Orlando, it requires a small amount of preparation before you travel, but on arrival it removes the desk visit completely.
Alamo at TPA also offers self-service kiosks at the Rental Car Centre for customers who have pre-registered their details online but have not fully completed the Skip the Counter process. The kiosk prints a receipt-sized rental agreement; you then proceed directly to the lot.
The three service levels at Alamo TPA:
Service | What it means | Counter visit required? |
|---|---|---|
Counter Service | Standard - all details taken at the desk | Yes |
Accelerated Check-In / Kiosk | Details submitted online in advance - use kiosk on arrival | Kiosk only - faster than counter |
Skip the Counter | No desk, no kiosk - straight to the car | No |
To activate Skip the Counter, complete Alamo's online check-in before you travel. Submit your driving licence details, contact information, payment details, and accept the rental agreement digitally. Eligibility conditions apply, including a minimum 24-hour advance booking, a credit card in the lead driver's name, and no same-day reservations. If your booking is through a broker arrangement, contact our UK team before travel to confirm which pick-up option applies.

Tampa's toll roads: What UK & European drivers need to know
Greater Tampa has several toll roads that UK visitors will encounter depending on where they are headed. Unlike some Florida destinations where tolls are occasional, the main routes in and around Tampa Bay are heavily tolled, and all are fully cashless. You cannot pay at a toll booth with cash or a card at the kiosk. If you drive through without a registered transponder, you will be billed by post at a significantly higher rate than the standard toll.
Veterans, Selmon, Frankland are tolled; For the full walkthrough of Florida's toll system, including SunPass rates and how to avoid rental company toll fees, see our guide to Florida toll roads for UK drivers.
The key toll roads you are likely to use:
Veterans Expressway / Suncoast Parkway (SR-589): Runs north from TPA toward Gulf Coast communities including Odessa, Lutz, and onward toward Spring Hill. Use this if you are heading to beaches north of Clearwater or exploring Citrus County.
Selmon Expressway (SR-618): An east–west expressway through central Tampa, used for routes toward Brandon and eastern suburbs.
I-275 / Howard Frankland Bridge: Crosses Tampa Bay toward St Petersburg and Pinellas County. Sections of this route are tolled, specifically the Express Lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (heading south to Sarasota).
Florida's Turnpike (SR-91): If you are driving from TPA toward the Kissimmee, Davenport, Haines City, or Clermont villa areas east of Tampa, you will use the Florida Turnpike for part of the journey. All Turnpike tolls are cashless.
Your toll options at TPA, and one important difference from MCO
The Florida Visitor Toll Pass is a prepaid electronic toll hangtag available exclusively at Orlando International Airport. For more information about how the Visitor Toll Pass works, see our guide. Unfortunately, it is not available for collection at Tampa Airport.
You have three practical alternatives:
1. SunPass
Florida's own electronic toll transponder. A SunPass Mini sticker or portable transponder can be purchased from local retailers such including Walgreens, CVS, Publix, and Turnpike service plazas, costing about $4.99 for the Mini. A pre-loaded SunPass is accepted on all Florida toll roads and express lanes, including all routes around Tampa Bay and the Florida Turnpike.
2. Hire company toll programme
All major suppliers at TPA offer their own toll programme at the desk, Hertz PlatePass, Avis Toll Pass, and similar products. These cover you for all cashless tolls automatically. The significant drawback is a daily service fee that applies for every day of your hire period, whether you use a toll road or not. If you are only planning a short drive from TPA into St Pete or Clearwater where tolls are minimal, weigh the daily fee against your actual likely usage before accepting at the desk.
3. Toll-by-Plate
If you use a toll road without a registered transponder, Florida's tolling system photographs your number plate and issues a bill to the registered vehicle owner, your hire company. The supplier then passes the charge to you, typically with an administration fee added. This is the most expensive option and should be treated as a fallback only, not a plan.
What to bring, what to expect, and what not to get caught out by
The hire car desk is not the place to discover you have left your driving licence in your checked luggage. A few minutes of preparation before you travel saves real delay at the Rental Car Centre.
Documents you need at collection:
Full in-date UK Photocard Driving Licence, the plastic card is your primary document. Your licence must be current and valid for the full hire period. If you hold the old-style UK paper driving licence (not the plastic photocard), you must also obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you travel. Without an IDP, the rental desk may refuse to release your vehicle.
Passport - required by all major suppliers at TPA for identity verification.
Credit card in the lead driver's name, the name must match your booking and licence exactly. Required for the security deposit hold at collection.
Your Smarter Car Hire Florida booking confirmation which includes your booking reference number.
If you are adding an additional driver, they must be present at collection with their own valid driving licence and passport.
The deposit hold
Even on a zero-deposit car hire booking, your supplier will place a temporary security hold on the lead driver's credit card. This is standard practice, it is not a charge, and no money leaves your account. The hold is released when you return the car undamaged. If you are on a tighter travel budget, factor this in before you travel so it does not come as a surprise at the desk.
Some charges are payable locally at collection, including young driver surcharges (ages 21–24), out-of-hours fees, and any optional extras. These charges are clearly outlined in your quote, although because they are payable locally, they are not included in your quote price.
Remember, all bookings with Smarter Car Hire Florida include Collision damage waiver (CDW), Theft waiver (TW), and Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI), all with zero excess, full details are in our Florida car hire insurance guide for UK holidaymakers. There is no requirement to purchase any further cover at the rental desk.
Essential "land and go" checklist for UK & European drivers at TPA
Before you leave the Rental Car Centre, check off these items:
Documentation checked: UK Photocard Licence, passport, and credit card in the lead driver's name, all present and verified at the desk.
The "Choice Line": If your supplier offers a choice lot, you can select any car in your booked category. Check the mileage and fuel level before leaving the space.
Right on Red: In Florida, you may turn right at a red traffic light after coming to a full stop, unless a sign states otherwise. This catches many UK drivers off guard on day one.
Speed limits: Posted in miles per hour. Typical limits: 70 mph on interstate highways, 55–65 mph on state roads, 30–35 mph in urban areas. Limits are actively enforced. For more information about Florida driving laws and enforcement, see our comprehensive guide to Florida driving laws for UK tourists.
Booster Seat Laws: Florida law requires children aged 5 and under to use a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device. From age 6, a seatbelt is legally sufficient, though boosters are recommended until the child reaches 4'9". Applies in hire cars. See our guide to Florida child car seat laws for full details.
Fuelling up: Most hire cars use Regular Petrol (87 Octane). Look for the black handle at the pump. The green handle is almost always Diesel — do not use it in a petrol hire car.
Where can a hire car take you from Tampa Airport?
For UK visitors, a hire car out of Tampa opens up the entire Gulf Coast, and gives you options that no transfer or coach tour can match.
Destination | Distance from TPA | Drive time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
Downtown Tampa | 6 miles | 15–20 minutes |
St Pete Beach | 22 miles | 35 minutes |
Clearwater Beach | 21 miles | 35–40 minutes |
Busch Gardens Tampa | 8 miles | 15 minutes |
Haines City | 63 miles | 60–75 minutes |
Davenport | 70 miles | 70–85 minutes |
Clermont | 80 miles | 80–90 minutes |
Kissimmee | 81 miles | 80–90 minutes |
Sarasota | 55 miles | 55–65 minutes |
Fort Myers | 115 miles | 1 hour 45 minutes |
Naples | 140 miles | 2 hours |
All distances and drive times are approximate. Actual journey times will vary with traffic conditions, time of day, and route. The I-4 corridor and approaches to the Osceola County and Polk County villa areas can experience significant congestion during peak holiday periods.

Tampa Airport car hire FAQs
-
No. Only Orlando International Airport (MCO) offers the physical hangtag kiosks. If you are flying into Miami International (MIA) or Tampa International (TPA), your best alternative is to purchase a SunPass Mini (approximately $4.99 / £4) from a local CVS, Walgreens or Publix supermarket. You will need to create a free account at SunPass.com.
Note that access to sunpass.com from UK IP addresses is inconsistent, some UK visitors can access it without difficulty, while others encounter an access denied security block depending on their internet service provider. If you can access the site from your UK connection, you can register your SunPass account through the website directly. If you encounter a block, the SunPass mobile app carries no such restriction and is the correct alternative. If you specifically need website access and are being blocked, connecting via a reputable VPN service set to a US server will typically resolve the issue. Register the device to your hire car and pre-load it with funds before using any toll roads.

All car hire booked through Smarter Car Hire Florida is available for Pick-up at the on-site Rental Car Centre. To get there, follow the signs for rental cars, take the SkyConnect people mover, then to you the rental car desks.
